Throughout my time in high school, I had very low self-esteem and self-confidence due to my anxiety. I have always had a passion for dance so when I was introduced to Zumba I instantly fell in love. After participating in some Zumba classes I became more confident in myself, Zumba was my escape place when I was feeling anxious or down.
A year after joining a Zumba club, I asked my PE teacher if I could lead a warm-up for my peers. This was a huge task for me to do, as I never would have imagined myself doing this a few months earlier.
When my PE teacher announced to the class that I would be doing this warm-up, many of my peers doubted me as they have all seen me as the shy girl who struggles with anxiety.
However, I survived through the entire warm-up which made me feel like I was on top of the world! Not long after doing this, I found myself being asked and succeeding to run a club, talk in assemblies, lead a Zumba class for staff training and host a charity event. After each one of my successes I became more confident and my anxiety slowly came under control as I found a way to cope.
On 4 July 2017, I was nominated for the North Tyneside Star Awards for overcoming anxiety through Zumba. I won my category and I had never been more proud of myself. That was until my PE teacher told me that she had nominated me for the Girls Active Awards 2017 for the category of ‘Wellness Transformation’.
Not long after being nominated, I was revealed as the winner of the National North Region Girls Active Award 2017. Ever since achieving all of these amazing things, I have became a more confident and happy person all through Zumba. I now have my own YouTube channel, Meme N, where I create content for health & wellbeing either through Zumba routines or stories about overcoming anxiety.
Without the Girls Active programme I wouldnât have been able to share my story with so many people. It has given me so many amazing opportunities, like being able to write for the Youth Sport Trust’s magazine.
I am so grateful for YST’s support as they have helped me to develop a better me and I canât wait to see what other opportunities they have for me. There are so many young people in this world that deserve the chance to find something they love and Girls Active has given so many people this chance. If my story can help at least one person, then I know Iâve made a difference to someoneâs life, which is all I have ever wanted.
The Girls Active programme offered me the chance to be an ambassador this year for the awards. I have been able to take over their Instagram page for a week. During my takeover, I went live to answer questions but also allowed people to learn more about me.
Being an ambassador for this yearâs awards has been breathtaking. If someone had told me I would be doing this a few years ago, I wouldnât have believed them.
So, to anyone who is reading this and has a passion for something, do it! It may take a while so stay patient, but you most definitely wonât regret it. You may stumble on the way to doing your passion but keep pushing yourself and one day youâll make it, and itâll be the best feeling in the world.
